North America Route
This is a map of my overall route through North America. This shows roughly the legs of the trip corresponding to sections of my journal. The leg from New York City to Seattle (red) took me from 1500 miles to 7,500 on the bike, Alaska and back up to 12,500, the small leg down to Burning Man and out to San Fransisco up to 14,500, down to La Paz, Mexico about 16,000, and into Central America (in Antigua, Guatemala) 19,300.
During the West Coast section I ended up returning to New York City and upstate New York for 3 weeks. The blue line from Seattle up past Juneau is the ferry trip I took from Bellingham, and I also took ferries to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and from La Paz in Baja California Sur to Mazatlan on the mainland.
This map shows my route through the Atlantic Provinces of Canada. I took a ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. I also took a ferry to Newfoundland, got about a third of the way to St John, then realized I didn't have the time to wait for the ferry on the other side - the next two were in 12 hours and then 4 days. Driving all night to catch a ferry back made no sense to me, and I needed to be in Montreal to meet Cathy a week later, so I turned around and took the same ferry back. I took the ferry to Prince Edward Island, and then took the bridge back to New Brunswick.
Here's my route from the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, landing in Haines, then to Fairbanks, up to Deadhorse, then back to Fairbanks. From Fairbanks I went to Denali Park, then to Anchorage, and made a round trip to Seward. Finally I left through Palmer back up to Tok Junction, then up to Chicken Alaska on the Top of the World Highway. From Chicken I went through Dawson City, then down to Whitehorse, where I picked up the Alaska Highway (also called the AlCan) down to Prince George.
